DESCRIPTION
One of Switzerland's most iconic passes, connecting north and south since the Middle Ages, the St. Gotthard rises to 2,106 metres at the heart of the Alps. Its strategic importance made it a vital trade route that helped shape the economic and political development of the Swiss Confederation. Merchants, armies, pilgrims, and travellers all crossed this gateway between the German- and Italian-speaking worlds.
Today, the historic Tremola road remains one of the most celebrated climbs in the Alps. Thirty-eight hairpins of history carved into the stone of the Alps, its perfectly preserved cobbled switchbacks wind dramatically up the southern flank, offering a unique journey through both landscape and heritage. Surrounded by granite peaks, mountain lakes, and stark alpine scenery, the St. Gotthard is far more than a pass: it is a symbol of Switzerland itself and an essential pilgrimage for every cyclist drawn to the great roads of the Alps.
